  • We first (and last) visited Kuala Lumpur in 1976 - fifty years ago!

The KL we saw in 1976 no longer exists. We stayed in a brothel then (ok - we thought it was a hotel), and ate in street markets. High rise wasn't a thing.

This time we were just having a couple of nights in the city to break up our journey and give us shorter flights during daylight hours. We had booked a place in Brickfields, close to the central railway station, and took the train direct from the airport.

We are not fans of mobile phones, but use one when we are travelling, mainly to use google maps for navigation in unknown locations. KL gave us our first run-in with Mr Google - he tried to get us to walk along a major highway flyover in a huge loop to get from the front of the railway station, where we emerged, to the back, where our apartment was. Eventually, with a bit of enquiry, we figured out that we had to cut back through a shopping centre to get out in the right part of town.

The apartment was a bit of a shock - the place was fine, but it was on the fiftieth floor of a huge complex. We would never have booked it had we known we'd be so high up, but it did give us a fantastic view over the city, especially at night.

With only two days we were never going to see much of KL, but we managed to walk along the Klang River to chinatown, visiting temples and markets along the way.
